Avalon Hayes Bunge, potter
I strive to make pots that are functional, durable, beautiful, well-balanced and a pleasure to use every day.
All work is made by hand on the potter’s wheel, sometimes with the aid of a tabletop slab roller. Current focus is the use of colored pigments added directly to porcelain clay before forming and firing, a modern hybrid of two historic traditions: English agateware and Japanese nerikomi.
A geologist by training, I find inspiration in folded metamorphic rocks, meandering braided streambeds, and the pathways of roots through soil. The swirl of life unfolding all around us, the dance of pollinators across a season and the drift of continents over eons, all find expression in my pots.
